On God

Firstly, when you say you believe in god, which god are you referring to? Baal, Jupiter, Quetzalcoatl, Odin... maybe the Hindu gods? or Yahweh, the god of the abrahamic religions (Judaism, Christianity, Islam)?

By what criteria you choose one over the other? And don't tell me "the miracles in the holy books." The holy books of every religion speak about miracles happening "then" and ironically none of them happens nowdays.

But suppose you choose the god of the abrahamic religions. What does that automatically mean? It means that the believers of all the other religions are stupid and you are the smart one.

Why don't all people worship your god if it is purely a matter of logic? You only need to inform them of your argument and you will immediately convert them.

If you don't believe that everyone else is stupid though, you must accept that it is indeed just a matter of faith. But if it's just a matter of faith, then how do you know that your religion is superior to every other?

Ok, let's suppose you've picked a god, Yahweh. Then? How do you choose between Judaism, Christianity or Islam? If we choose Christianity, what is the safe criterion to choose between the orthodox and the catholic faith? Between the old and the new calendar? Among the teachings of Anthimos or Hieronymus?

You can find any (apparently arbitrary) criterion you want. And before you tell me that is not arbitrary, think again. If for example you are Catholic, so many millions of Orthodox are stupid and you're smart. They are idiots who do not believe that the Holy Spirit "proceeds from the Son". And how exactly can you confirm or deny that this thing is true? You can't.

Have you ever wondered that, if god exists and has specific requirements from us, why there are so many religions and sects, why everyone gives his own interpretation of the nature of god and his will? If there was indeed a god, wouldn't he automatically solve all these issues? for instance by sending an angel to the head of every religion to explain them that his will is expressed properly only by Catholic Christians or by the New Calendarists and that everyone should follow these teachings.

Didn't god think of that very easy process? Did he decide to leave the greater part of humanity in ignorance and sin?

If you are a Christian, consider this: if your almighty god existed, why would he ever allow Islam to grow to be such a huge religion?

If you are a Muslim, ask yourself, if your almighty god existed, why would he ever allow the division of Islam into Sunni and Shia?

Of course, you will say: if there is no god then why are so many miracles happening? They're not happening. Just because there is no god.

Okay, let's assume that someone is diagnosed with a disease and prays to Virgin Mary in order to get well. And indeed, after some time the tests show that he was cured. This is not a criterion for the effectiveness of the "Blessed Virgin".

Have you ever thought that neither her nor any other saint ever managed to make an amputated arm grow back? Why don't miracles ever happen in these cases?

Before you orthodox christians tell me about the "crying" icon of Virgin Mary, i will ask you this: How do you know that there's none behind it peeling onions? :ppp

Sorry for that but i'm too tempted not to joke about it, it's too ridiculous. You do realize of course how much money the church gets even when you buy candles. So imagine what happens when thousands of believers gather to see the 'miracle'.

If indeed there is a god, rather than making images cry, let him feed some starving kids. Or even better, let him deposit a few millions in my bank account.

I do not know exactly how the universe was created. We don't know yet but that doesn't mean that someone has created it.
Even if you accept that some power created the world, that does not automatically mean that this force hears your prayers, cares about you, what you do, how you live your life and it doesn't mean that you have secured an area in paradise just because you fasted on Good Friday. One thing does not imply the other.

But there is also the argument: "Oh well, but if you do not believe, who do you turn to when you feel weak?". You realize, I hope, that my need to turn to someone, does not mean that that someone exists. The need for my New Year's gift, does not imply the existence of Santa Claus.

But what about those who had an "experience" with god? Firstly i need to remind them that over the centuries and in every religion, there were always people who had "personal experience" with the divine. Who is right then? The person who had personal experience with Apollo, with goddess Kali, with Yahweh or with the aliens who kidnapped him?

And how is it that Christians, Hindus and other religious people each have personal experience with their own god and never the other way around? Why doesn't goddess Kali appear in front of a Christian monk or Jesus in front of a Hindu priest? Our mind plays strange games. An experience which we experience as real, is not necessarily true. Neurologists and psychiatrists have studied and explained these for many years.

But it is almost impossible to convince a believer who feels special because he was the god's "chosen" that what they experienced was something included in the wider category of "hallucinations". Especially since he felt like it was real.

God probably does not exist. Live your life free of false limitations and fairy tales.

But then, are all these people who believe in god stupid? No, they are not.

Faith in god means many things. It implies that nothing gets lost when we go through life. That it continues to exist elsewhere. It implies that our loved ones are somewhere in the sky looking at us and that we would eventually meet them again. It implies that our good acts are rewarded, while all these bad people will receive fair punishment, if not here, at least in the next life.It implies that there is an entity that, as a loving father, listens to us when we turn to him and supports us.

If anyone denies his faith in god, he is missing all these. Our everyday life is not a playground. On the contrary. It is full of pain, failures, difficulties and disappointments. Faith in god may help people deal with all that. Gives strength and hope.

Moreover, he who denies god, must also accept that everything he heard for so many years from school, parents and church are all lies. He should build a completely new identity.

It is indeed very difficult for a person to lift that weight.
